A 32-gun frigate built in 1799, the USS Essex was among the most prolific early warships of the young American Navy. During the War of 1812, she sailed the Pacific and captured 18 merchant ships, resulting in a crippled whaling industry and over a million dollars in lost revenue for the British. In 1814, however, she was commandeered by the Royal Navy, spending the rest of her career as the HMS Essex, sold at auction in 1837.
