Formed in England as part of RAF Fighter Command, the RCAF 417 Squadron "City of Windsor" flew the Spitfire MkVb and Vc between October 1942 and September 1943. In June 1942, the squadron transferred to Egypt to offer support to the British 8th Army as part of the Desert Air Force. By April 1943, they were the only Canadians in the Desert Air Force that provided close air support throughout Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. On June 30, 1954, 417 Squadron was disbanded.
