Commissioned on December 21, 1942, the Type XIV supply and replenishment U-487 U-Boat was commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Helmut Metz for her entire career. On July 13, 1943, she was attacked in the central Atlantic by five U.S. Navy Avengers and Wildcats operating off the USS Core. Crew members of the U-487 were taken off guard — so much so that sunbathers could be seen on the deck — and the vessel was sunk, killing 31 men. The remaining survivors were taken captive aboard the USS Barker.
This 1/350 scale, die cast replica of the historic vessel features a finely textured superstructure and deck surfaces, an accurate color scheme, detailed rudders and propellers, realistic surface weapons, a unique cutaway design that reveals the interior weapons including torpedoes, authentic markings from 1943, and a commemorative nameplate display stand. Measures approximately 7¼" long.
