Built during the Second World War, Fletcher-Class destroyers — of which 175 were commissioned — served almost exclusively in the Pacific, responsible for the sinking of 29 Imperial submarines. After the war, many of these ships were sold internationally; ironically, many of the purchasing nations were enemy states during their initial commission, including Japan, Germany, and Italy. Of those that remained in the U.S. fleet, a number saw combat service in Korea and Vietnam.
